Volunteers who work in The Department of Pastoral and Spiritual Care at Derriford make up almost a third of all volunteers in the whole hospital. There are several different volunteer roles, but one in particular is that of Pastoral Visitor, which requires excellent listening skills and an ability to be alongside not only patients, but staff and visitors too. Following application, prospective candidates are interviewed and then if selected, are trained for this role in a seven week training course. They are allocated a ward to visit and are expected to visit for one morning a week, with the minimum of a year’s commitment. This is demanding but rewarding work, and is an opportunity to hone your listening skills and make a difference to those you visit. Applications are welcome from candidates of any or no faith background.
For further details and information about other volunteering roles within the department please email Rev’d Jan Collis on j.collis@nhs.net or telephone 01752 792313.
