When it comes to the arts, whether painting, sculpture, literature or music, most of us if asked, would say,” I know what I like”. In reality it would probably be more accurate to say, “I like what I know”.
As far as music is concerned, that of the Western European tradition which has been evolving over 2000 years, has given us so much that is unfamiliar to explore and discover…
… and that is the purpose of our Group.
Our members come with different tastes ranging from opera, modern, classical, chamber works, early music and some with experiences in music making by playing an instrument or singing. However we are all keen to share our tastes and discover something new.
Our approach is to choose a topic or project, search among our collections of CDs or records, find pieces that are appropriate and present them to the Group. Through our research we have learnt about the development of the music in countries such as USA, Russia, Scandinavia and Spain and learnt much about their composers. This enables us to enjoy works that are familiar but more often there will be pieces that are quite new to us.
The monthly meetings have continued for several years during which we have been enjoying ‘Discovering Music’.
